Getting Your Results

secure results icon

Your test results will be available on this website or by phone. Your test results will be kept private and only you will be able to see them. In order to get your results on this website you must use the password that you set up when you ordered your test kit. If you need assistance, contact the I Know San Diego Helpline at (619) 692 KNOW (5669).

Only YOU can access your test results. We can’t release your results to your parents or sex partners without your permission. In fact, we can’t even tell them whether you have been tested or not. Your privacy and confidentiality are extremely important to the San Diego Public Health Department, and we take protecting your privacy very seriously. You will need the password you set up to view your test results. For more information, see our privacy policy.

Test results will be ready about one week after you mail back the test kit. When you order your test kit, you can ask for an email or text message to be sent to you to tell you when your results are ready. This email or text message will not contain your results, it will just let you know that it is time to log back on to your secure account on this website to see your results.

Results are usually ready a week after you send in the test. If it’s already been a week since you sent in your test, check the website again in a few days, call the I Know San Diego Helpline at (619) 692 KNOW (5669), or e-mail us and say that you are looking for your test results.

It is possible, but not likely.  No diagnostic test is 100% accurate, but if you took the test as instructed the results should be correct.  Sometimes your health care provider may order additional testing to confirm the result if they are concerned that the test may be wrong.

If either of your chlamydia or gonorrhea test results comes back positive this means that you have an STI. Remember, chlamydia and gonorrhea infections are treatable! But don’t wait to get treated because your infection could get worse.

You will need to visit a clinic to get treated right away. Print out or show your provider the results of your test when you are at the clinic. If you don’t have a doctor, you can use the clinic locator on this website to find a clinic near you. Both chlamydia and gonorrhea are usually treated with a single dose of medicine. Often, this medicine is given to you at the doctor’s office or clinic right away when you go for treatment. It’s important not to have sex for a full week after you and your sex partner(s) have been treated.

Once your infection has been treated, you should be tested again (re-tested) in 3 months to make sure you did not get re-infected. If you have any questions about your results, call the I Know San Diego Helpline at (619) 692 KNOW (5669) or e-mail us.

You may be able to show the provider your results on your mobile device if you can pull up the website while you are at the clinic. If you are unable to print or show your test results to your provider, you can also call the I Know San Diego Helpline at (619) 692 KNOW (5669). Let us know which doctor or clinic you are going to for treatment and we'll send them your test results via confidential fax.

negative results icon

A negative result means that you didn’t have a chlamydia or a gonorrhea infection when you took the test. You don’t need to do anything further. Just remember to get checked again in a year or sooner if you have a new sex partner. And remember, if you are having sex, using a condom every time will reduce your risk for getting chlamydia, gonorrhea, and other STIs, including HIV. Please keep in mind that these results are just for chlamydia and gonorrhea and do not provide information about other STIs including HIV. These results also will not show you if you got an infection from sexual activity you’ve had since you took the test.

If you want a test for HIV or any other STI, or if you think you might have been exposed to chlamydia or gonorrhea in the anus or throat (from anal or oral sex), you should go to a clinic and get checked. If you need help finding a clinic near you, use our clinic locator, call the I Know San Diego Helpline at (619) 692 KNOW (5669), or e-mail us.

No. These results are just for chlamydia and gonorrhea and do not show anything about other STIs, including HIV. If you want to get tested for HIV or other types of STIs (like genital herpes, trichomonas or syphilis), you need to go to a clinic.

If you need help finding a clinic for treatment, use our clinic locator, call the I Know San Diego Helpline at (619) 692 KNOW (5669), or e-mail us. The test you took does not test for chlamydia or gonorrhea in the throat or anus (from oral or anal sex). If you are concerned you might have an STI in those places, talk to your doctor.

indeterminate results icon

An indeterminate result means that the result was not clear, and we cannot say whether the test is positive or negative. To be on the safe side, you should get tested again. You can go to a clinic near you or log in to order a new home test kit. Remember, having an indeterminate result doesn’t mean you have an infection, it just means the results didn’t tell us anything.
